Body Knowledge: Medicine and the Humanities in Conversation – 2-4 September

University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg

Conference to be held on 2-4 September 2013

Between 2 and 4 September 2013, WiSER will convene three days of intensive conversation among scholars and practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines. In addition to panel sessions, there will be plenary lectures by Professor Julie Livingston and Professor Jane Taylor (Leeds) as well as several roundtable discussions.

  • An updated version of the Body Knowledge Conference programme is available here.
  • Information for delegates (including venues, transport, and general advice about Johannesburg) can be found here.

Attached to the conference, a special exhibition of work by Colin Richards begins on 15 August. Curated by Professor Penny Siopis (UCT), hosted by the Origins Centre, A Fine Line reveals the connections between Richards’ earlier work as an anatomical illustrator and his famous later paintings. Also at the Origins Centre, and connected to Body Knowledge, is a must-see installation by Debbie Glencross entitled Facing Origins.

In addition to these exhibitions, Origins will host two public talks: ‘Medicine and Art: A Long Conversation,’ and a debate on the Paleo Diet.
