Understanding Johannesburg: City-Wide Urban Analysis and Morphological Evolution

Karen Lévy, Researcher at the French Institute of Urbanism (IFU) and at the French Development Agency (AFD).

The metropolitan structure of Johannesburg is unique and inherited from its complex history. The urban morphology of Johannesburg laid the foundations of a structurally and socially fragmented city. This presentation is a graphic and critical analysis of urban trends and issues.

As an Architect and Urban Planner in the private sector, Karen Lévy has more than 10 years of experience in the analysis of complex urban projects. Her interest in understanding urban issues led her to engage with academic research and to specialise in the cities of the South.
